🎙Mariana: How did you interest in music begin?   🎸L.Sabathan: Early in the 70’s when I was a child, by my older brother who was bass player in a Rock band and had a huge Rock vinyls collection, my father was also a musician and music teacher, I’m born in the right familly for this.

🎙Mariana: What bands and albums inspired you the most?
🎸L.Sabathan: Slayer: Show No Mercy Bathory: The Return, Judas Priest Defenders Of The Faith, Mercyful Fate: Don’t Break The Oath, Morbid Angel:  Altars Of Madness,  Possessed: Seven Churhes, Venom: Welcome To Hell,  Metallica: Kill’em All , Sodom: In The Sign Of Evil….to name just a few.

🎙Mariana: Which bassists had the biggest influence on your style?
🎸L. Sabathan: My favorite bassists are Geddy Lee (Rush), John Entwistle (The Who), Steve Harris (Iron Maiden), and Cliff Burton (Metallica), to name a few.

🎙Mariana: What does the stage name "Lord Sabathan" mean to you? 
🎸L.Sabathan: it’s totaly my personnality, myself and the way I am, no other stage names could fit better to me than this one.


🎙Mariana: You once said you didn’t care about Enthroned anymore — do you still feel that way today?
🎸L. Sabathan: Yes I do... Enthroned is not my band anymore, and it was the community of Cernunnos and myself in the beginning, I never listen the material since my departure in 2006, I just know the direction they took is not my way, not my kind of stuffs.

🎙Mariana: Darkness and death have always been part of Black Metal’s essence, but when they hit you personally, as with the loss of Cernunnos, the impact is inevitable. Were you still able to keep that vision of death as transcendence, energy, and renewal?
🎸L. Sabathan: Yes I do.

   🎙Mariana: What attracted you most to joining Slaughter Messiah in 2011, after leaving Enthroned?
🎸L.Sabathan: the attitude and the style practised by the guys, Black Thrash 80’s vive, all that I want and all that I need, and all that I am… I was totaly sick of the Black Metal scene in particular the mentality back 20 years ago, fortunately things has changed nowadays, in a good way…all the assholes who used to pollued the scene  have disappeared and are now wimped out.


🎙Mariana: What changes do you feel you've made to the band's sound since joining?
🎸L.Sabathan: I blackised and Satanised the band when I joined them in 2011, they were more crossover oriented, we started to composed more dark riffs and got a more Necro Thrash sound, changing the tuning from E to D, and of course I brang a more aggressive way of singing than the ex Singer, and we also changed the logo (I make it realised myself by Elias Tormentor from Chile).


🎙Mariana: Cursed to the Pyre; The first album, arrived almost a decade after you joined. What did recording it mean to you, and how do you remember that process?
🎸L. Sabathan: The process was perfect, we had fun during the recording, the ambiance in the band was top, and we used to record mostly the weekends, that’s why the recoring lasts for 3 months, we started it in November 2018 and finnished with the mix in March 2019.
This has mean a huge step forward since the EP’s  and demo releases, but the best is yet to come with the second álbum next year.

  🎙Mariana: What message do you think the band is sending to its fans with its latest EP, Exorcized to None?

🎸L.Sabathan: Nothing in particular, just pure Satanic Black Thrash Attack the old school way, keep it Metal and fuck the rest.

 

    🎙Mariana: What was your best live show that you remember?
🎸L.Sabathan: this year was Alcatraz Fest in August, also Thrash Nightmare in Czeck Republic, also the famous live in Krölpa in Germany on the tour with Vomitor in 2019, we have recorded a live album totaly sold out now, and succeed the catch the crazy atmosphere of that night.
we are satisfied of the most of our live shows, the worst one was in Portugal in 2023, sadly but we hope to return there in a way better day.


🎙Mariana: What are your favorite songs to play live?
🎸L.Sabathan: "Pyre", "Black Speed Terror", "Exorcised to None", "Bells of Damnation"... to name jst a few, but a lot of more of course.

   

   🎙Mariana: How do you see the black/thrash scene today compared to the '90s when you were in Enthroned?
🎸L.Sabathan: Black/thrash in the 90’s was not the most popular style, it came back way stronger with the 80’s Heavy Metal revival around 2007/2008.
so yes today there is a lot of bands and the new generation make it very well, the way to be and the ways it was back in the 80’s.
in the 90’s Black and Death Metal was much more over the top then Black/Thrash.

🎙Mariana: What can we expect from Slaughter Messiah in the coming years,  Besides the new album, are there any plans for international tours?
🎸L.Sabathan: Yes, we’re working on our second full lenght album now, we have taken a lot of delay due to the incessant live shows, plus other activities, but now we have stoped live appearances until we have finnished to record the new álbum.  And of course when it will be released, international tours and live shows will follow.   

🎙Mariana: What are the things that have influenced your writing style?,
Are there films have influenced your songwriting?
🎸L.Sabathan: Yes, mostly movies and life experiences, that’s where I took my inspirations to write lyrics.
also real stories that happens once upon a time.


🎙Mariana: How do you manage your makeup for shows? Do you do it yourself?
🎸L.Sabathan: Yes, I do everything myself, S.M., Sabathan or Heinous, all my make up is done by myself exclusively.

🎙Mariana: Is there a particular venue you've never played before that you'd like to play? (Specific country or stadium)
🎸L.Sabathan: Stadium not yet hehehehe or probably never, but venues, Festivals there is a lot, Thrash Nightmare, Alcatraz Fest, Escape Metal Corner (Vienna),  Helvete (Oberhausen Germany), Resonanzwerk (Oberhausen Germany), Running Free Festival (Bulgaria), Kaltenbach Open-Air Festival (Austria), Elpee (Deinze Belgium)…..to name just a few, a lot of more but these comes first in my head. 

🎙Mariana: How do you feel when younger fans approach you and see you as a legend of the scene?
🎸L.Sabathan: I never considered myself as a legend, but just a totaly devoted musician, legend is another standard to me (like Ozzy, Dio, Lemmy, King Diamond….), those are legends, I don’t pretend tu have this status.
I’m always amazed when younger people approach me cause they are the next generation, the ones who can keep the flame alive after us, we need them and need to respect them, so It’s always a pleasure to talk with them and support them as well, they are our future.

🎙Mariana: ¿Cómo comenzó tu interés por la música?
🎸L. Sabathan: A principios de los 70, cuando era niño, gracias a mi hermano mayor, que era bajista en una banda de rock y tenía una enorme colección de vinilos de rock. Mi padre también era músico y profesor de música; nací en la familia perfecta para esto.

🎙Mariana: ¿Qué bandas o discos son las que más te han inspirado?

🎙Mariana: ¿Qué bajistas tuvieron mayor influencia en tu estilo?

🎙Mariana: ¿Qué significa para vos el nombre artístico “Lord Sabathan”?
🎸L. Sabathan: Es totalmente mi personalidad, soy yo y la forma en que soy. Ningún otro nombre artístico podría encajar mejor conmigo que este.

🎙Mariana: Una vez dijiste que ya no te importaba Enthroned — ¿seguís sintiendo lo mismo hoy en día?
🎸L. Sabathan: Sí, así es... Enthroned ya no es mi banda, y al principio era la comunidad de Cernunnos y mía. No he escuchado nada del material desde mi partida en 2006; solo sé que la dirección que tomaron no es la mía, no es mi tipo de cosas.

🎙Mariana: La oscuridad y la muerte siempre fueron parte de la esencia del Black Metal, pero cuando te tocan personalmente —como con la pérdida de Cernunnos— el impacto es inevitable. ¿Aun así pudiste mantener esa visión de la muerte como trascendencia, energía y renovación?
🎸L. Sabathan: Sí, así es.

🎙Mariana: ¿Qué fue lo que más te atrajo de unirte a Slaughter Messiah en 2011, después de dejar Enthroned?
🎸L. Sabathan: La actitud y el estilo que practicaban los chicos: Black Thrash con vibra de los 80, todo lo que quiero, todo lo que necesito y todo lo que soy. Estaba totalmente harto de la escena del Black Metal, en especial de la mentalidad de hace 20 años. Por suerte, las cosas han cambiado para bien… todos los idiotas que solían contaminar la escena han desaparecido y ahora se han ablandado.

🎙Mariana: ¿Qué cambios sentís que aportaste al sonido de la banda desde que te uniste?
🎸L. Sabathan: “Blackicé” y “Satanicé” la banda cuando me uní en 2011. Antes eran más orientados al crossover. Empezamos a componer riffs más oscuros y logramos un sonido más Necro Thrash, cambiando la afinación de E a D. Y, por supuesto, traje una forma de cantar más agresiva que el exvocalista. También cambiamos el logo (lo hice realizar yo mismo por Elias Tormentor de Chile).

🎙Mariana: Cursed to the Pyre, el primer álbum, llegó casi una década después de que te uniste. ¿Qué significó grabarlo para vos y cómo recordás ese proceso?
🎸L. Sabathan: El proceso fue perfecto; nos divertimos durante la grabación. El ambiente en la banda era excelente y solíamos grabar mayormente los fines de semana, por eso la grabación duró tres meses. La empezamos en noviembre de 2018 y terminamos la mezcla en marzo de 2019.
Significó un gran paso adelante desde los EPs y demos anteriores, pero lo mejor está por venir con el segundo álbum el próximo año.

🎙Mariana: ¿Qué mensaje creés que la banda transmite a sus fans con su último EP, Exorcized to None?
🎸L. Sabathan: Nada en particular, solo puro Satanic Black Thrash Attack al estilo de la vieja escuela. Manténganlo metal y que se joda el resto.

🎙Mariana: ¿Cuál fue el mejor show en vivo que recordás?
🎸L. Sabathan: Este año fue Alcatraz Fest en agosto, también Thrash Nightmare en República Checa, y el famoso show en Krölpa, Alemania, durante la gira con Vomitor en 2019. Grabamos un álbum en vivo, totalmente agotado ahora, y logramos capturar la atmósfera loca de esa noche.
Estamos satisfechos con la mayoría de nuestros shows; el peor fue en Portugal en 2023, lamentablemente, pero esperamos volver en un mejor momento.

🎙Mariana: ¿Cuáles son tus canciones favoritas para tocar en vivo?
🎸L. Sabathan: "Pyre", "Black Speed Terror", "Exorcized to None", "Bells of Damnation"… por nombrar algunas, pero muchas más, por supuesto.

🎙Mariana: ¿Cómo ves la escena black/thrash hoy en comparación con los 90, cuando estabas en Enthroned?
🎸L. Sabathan: El black/thrash en los 90 no era el estilo más popular; volvió mucho más fuerte con el resurgimiento del heavy metal de los 80 alrededor de 2007/2008.
Así que sí, hoy hay muchas bandas, y la nueva generación lo está haciendo muy bien, con la actitud y la esencia de cómo era en los 80.
En los 90, el black y el death metal estaban mucho más en la cima que el black/thrash.

🎙Mariana: ¿Qué podemos esperar de Slaughter Messiah en los próximos años, además del nuevo álbum hay planes de giras internacionales?
🎸L. Sabathan: Sí, estamos trabajando en nuestro segundo álbum completo ahora. Nos hemos retrasado bastante debido a los shows en vivo constantes y otras actividades, pero ahora hemos detenido las apariciones hasta terminar la grabación del nuevo álbum.
Y, por supuesto, cuando salga, vendrán giras internacionales y nuevos shows en vivo.

🎙Mariana: ¿Qué cosas han influido en tu estilo para escribir? ¿Hay películas que te inspiren al componer?
🎸L. Sabathan: Sí, sobre todo las películas y las experiencias de vida. De ahí saco la inspiración para escribir letras.
También historias reales que ocurrieron alguna vez.

🎙Mariana: ¿Cómo manejás tu maquillaje para los shows? ¿Lo hacés vos mismo?
🎸L. Sabathan: Sí, lo hago todo yo mismo. S.M., Sabathan o Heinous: todo mi maquillaje está hecho exclusivamente por mí.

🎙Mariana: ¿Hay algún lugar en particular donde nunca hayas tocado y te gustaría hacerlo? (Algún país o estadio específico)
🎸L. Sabathan: En un estadio, todavía no, jajajaja, y probablemente nunca. Pero lugares o festivales hay muchos: Thrash Nightmare, Alcatraz Fest, Escape Metal Corner (Viena), Helvete (Oberhausen, Alemania), Resonanzwerk (Oberhausen, Alemania), Running Free Festival (Bulgaria), Kaltenbach Open-Air Festival (Austria), Elpee (Deinze, Bélgica)… por nombrar algunos, hay muchos más, pero esos son los primeros que me vienen a la cabeza.

🎙Mariana: ¿Cómo te sentís cuando los fans más jóvenes se te acercan y te ven como una leyenda de la escena?
🎸L. Sabathan: Nunca me consideré una leyenda, solo un músico totalmente devoto. Para mí, leyenda es otro nivel (como Ozzy, Dio, Lemmy, King Diamond…).
Esos son leyendas; yo no pretendo tener ese estatus.
Siempre me sorprende cuando se me acercan los jóvenes, porque son la próxima generación, los que pueden mantener viva la llama después de nosotros.
Los necesitamos y debemos respetarlos, así que siempre es un placer hablar con ellos y apoyarlos también. Ellos son nuestro futuro.
