🎙Mariana: How did your interest in music begin?

🎤Lord F.S: It all started pretty typically at school. Like it often happens, you meet people who share the same interests – and for me, that was a group of people who were just as passionate about music as I was.
We listened to music together, talked about bands, and at some point, you just feel the urge to try it yourself. And from there, one thing led to another – what started as an interest turned into a passion, and eventually into my own path in music.“


🎙Mariana: In the 1990s you were a member of the bands Sanvoisen, Dark Horse, and Picasso. How do you remember those early beginnings?
🎤Lord F.S: Those were incredibly formative years for me. Picasso was really where it all started – it was a band that grew directly out of our school environment. Back then, it was all about experimenting, writing our first songs, and just getting a feel for making music together as a band.
With Sanvoisen, I kind of fell into the music business. Things suddenly became more serious and structured, and I started to understand how the industry actually works.
And with Dark Horse, I was right in the middle of it. Especially through Armin Sabol, who had a major hit in Germany in the 80s with "Major Tom", I learned an incredible amount. Being around him took everything to another level for me – that’s when I really caught the music bug for good.

🎙Mariana: You were part of the band Mystery for a time. In what way do you feel you contributed to shaping a more defined style for that band?
🎤Lord F.S: At the time, Mystery was still experimenting with different sounds and influences. My role was to bring a bit of structure and a clearer musical direction. I actively worked on song arrangements, contributed ideas for riffs and melodies, and tried to shape the songs so they would have a distinct, recognizable style.
I think I helped the band define their sound more clearly – it wasn’t just about playing songs, but about creating a musical identity.


🎙Mariana: You spent seven years in the band Subway and recorded  albums with them. What do you feel changed in your career during that period?
🎤Lord F.S: Subway had three singers overall, and I was in the band from 1996 to 2003. I recorded two albums with them, and honestly, that’s when the experimenting was finally over for me. I really found my voice as a singer and nailed down my own style. It was the period where I learned to own every song, put my energy into it, and really define who I am on stage – that’s when my career really leveled up.

     

 🎙Mariana:With Subwayy you toured as an opening act for bands such as Kansas, famous for their hit《Dust in the Wind》 as well as the renowned bands Asia and Axxis. What did those experiences mean to you?
🎤Lord F.S: Of course, touring with such major bands was an incredible experience. For me, it wasn’t just exciting to play live, but also to see how professional shows are organized, how bands connect with their audience, and how a musician can really develop a strong presence on stage.
Experiences like that are truly priceless – they taught me what really matters and helped me grow my own skills. I learned a lot about timing, energy, stage performance, and handling stage nerves. Looking back, those tours shaped my career and gave me the confidence to perform as a musician in a much more independent and assured way.


🎙Mariana: In 2007 you founded Francis Soto Band, which remained active until 2010 and released two albums. What did it feel like to be fully in charge of a project for the first time?
🎤Lord F.S: Founding the Francis Soto Band in 2007 was a real milestone for me. For the first time, I had full responsibility – from choosing the songs and arranging them to shaping the entire artistic direction. It was exciting, but also a big challenge, because suddenly everything depended on me.
At the same time, it was incredibly liberating to bring my vision to life and see it come alive on stage and on the albums. That experience taught me how important leadership, organization, and making clear decisions are when you want to make a project truly successful.
 

  🎙Mariana: Your artistic name “Lord Francis Soto” has a very strong presence. How did that identity come about and what does it represent in your musical evolution?
🎤Lord F.S: The story behind “Lord Francis Soto” is actually quite fun and personal. My wife knows how much I love Scotland and have always dreamed of living there. A while ago, she surprised me by buying a Scottish lordship title and officially making me a lord—it was a gift, a gesture of love, and also a little joke between us.
So yes, technically the title is purchased, but it’s real in the sense that I’m officially recognized as a Scottish lord. I decided to use it for my music persona because it’s unique, memorable, and it reflects a part of who I am—someone inspired by Scotland, proud of it, and with a sense of humor about life.
It’s more than a title—it’s a story, a connection, and it adds a bit of flair to my music identity.


🎙Mariana: What attracted you most to the progressive metal band Ivory Tower, of which you have been a member since 2020?
🎤Lord F.S: In principle, this style isn’t new to me – I learned a lot playing in a progressive band with Sanvoisen. Ivory Tower is partly very progressive, but it also has a lot of straight-forward power metal. I believe music shouldn’t be made only for musicians, but mainly for the general audience. A purely progressive project can be hard for many people to connect with. That’s why I find Ivory Tower’s mix so exciting – technically challenging, yet energetic and directly engaging for the audience.

   

🎙Mariana: You have also participated as a vocalist in bands such as Infinity’s Call, Ampyre, Crime, Turn Up, and The Corona Tapes. How long does it take you to learn the repertoire for each band?
🎤Lord F.S: Actually, that’s not a big problem for me. Luckily, I’m able to pick up the material from the bands very quickly and get into the old songs. I listen to the tracks carefully, memorize the details, and can perform them live relatively fast. By now, it’s almost like second nature to me.

🎙Mariana: Stonemiller Inc. brings together musicians from different countries and backgrounds. How did the idea of forming this international project come about, and what does it mean to you to keep the melodic hard rock style of the 1980s alive?
🎤Lord F.S: It actually came about quite naturally. The guitarist Oli Fuhlhage (ex Mob Rules) had the idea to bring an international flair into the band – which of course comes with both advantages and challenges. The distance, in particular, makes it difficult to get everyone together for live shows.
And yes, the 80s are still alive – not just with Stonemiller. Many bands today dive into that sound, which is great, because the 80s really were the pinnacle of melodic hard rock. For me, it’s about keeping that spirit alive and carrying the energy and style of that era forward. 

       

🎙Mariana: Battle Royale, your new album available from March 20, 2026, will be released under your personal artistic identity. What personal vision or message did you want to express with this album that distinguishes it from your work with bands?
🎤Lord F.S: I’ve simply reached a point in my life where I can put my own story into music. It would be terrible if you had nothing to say – I, for one, have something to say! 😄 The great thing is that hopefully many people will recognize something in it, like, ‘Hey, I know this,’ or ‘Yeah, I feel the same way.’
I wanted to create songs that are honest, but that can also be fun, sometimes thoughtful, sometimes a little cheeky – all the things you experience in life. A solo album gives me the freedom to put everything in, without compromise. For me, right now is the perfect time to do this. I just hope that when people listen, they feel that someone is making music with real passion – and at the same time not losing their sense of humor.
BTW. Battle Royale,’ my new album, will now be released physically on April 10, 2026, but the MP3 version is already available.
 


🎙Mariana: Do you have any hobbies or passions besides music?
🎤Lord F.S: Honestly, when your whole life revolves around music, you don’t really need traditional hobbies. 😄 For me, music is everything – writing, playing, recording, touring, even just coming up with ideas – that’s my life.
Of course, it’s still good to switch off sometimes: a bit of sport, being in nature, watching a good movie, or just spending time with friends. Those little moments recharge you so you can get back to music with full energy

   

🎙Mariana: What advice would you give to new generations of musicians on how to sustain a career for more than three decades, considering all the technological and industry changes that influence music today?
🎤Lord F.S: I think the most important advice is to always stay authentic. Music is a passion, and anyone who just chases trends won’t last in the long run. You need to find your own voice and style – that stays relevant even as technology and the industry constantly change.
It’s also crucial to be flexible. The way music is produced, released, and consumed has changed enormously. Musicians have to be ready to learn new things, use new channels, and adapt to changes without losing their core identity.
And last but not least: patience and perseverance. There are highs and lows, setbacks, but if you are truly passionate and continuously work on your music, you can sustain a career for decades.


🎙Mariana: Is there a place where you have not yet performed live that you would love to sing in? (country, stadium, or festival)
🎤Lord F.S: Tokyo is definitely a place I’d love to perform live. After playing Wacken three times, you might think I’ve seen it all 😄 – but honestly, there are so many festivals around the world that you can’t even name them all. For me, it’s always about experiencing new places, new people, and new stages.

🎙Mariana: ¿Cómo comenzó tu interés por la música?
🎤Lord F.S: Todo comenzó de manera bastante típica en la escuela. Como suele suceder, conoces personas que comparten los mismos intereses, y en mi caso, era un grupo de gente tan apasionada por la música como yo.
Escuchábamos música juntos, hablábamos sobre bandas y, en algún momento, simplemente sientes la necesidad de intentarlo tú mismo. Y a partir de ahí, una cosa llevó a la otra: lo que comenzó como un interés se convirtió en una pasión y, finalmente, en mi propio camino en la música.

🎙Mariana:  En la década de 1990 fuiste miembro de las bandas Sanvoisen, Dark Horse y Picasso. ¿Cómo recuerdas esos primeros comienzos?
🎤Lord F.S: Fueron años increíblemente formativos para mí. Picasso fue realmente donde todo comenzó; era una banda que surgió directamente de nuestro entorno escolar. En ese entonces, todo se trataba de experimentar, escribir nuestras primeras canciones y simplemente sentir lo que era hacer música juntos como banda.
Con Sanvoisen, de alguna manera entré en la industria musical. Las cosas de repente se volvieron más serias y estructuradas, y empecé a entender cómo funciona realmente la industria.
Y con Dark Horse, estaba en el centro de todo. Especialmente gracias a Armin Sabol, quien tuvo un gran éxito en Alemania en los años 80 con “Major Tom”, aprendí muchísimo. Estar cerca de él llevó todo a otro nivel para mí; fue ahí cuando realmente me atrapó la música para siempre.

🎙Mariana: Formaste parte de la banda Mystery durante un tiempo. ¿De qué manera sientes que contribuiste a definir un estilo más claro para esa banda?
🎤Lord F.S: En ese momento, Mystery todavía estaba experimentando con diferentes sonidos e influencias. Mi rol fue aportar un poco de estructura y una dirección musical más clara. Trabajé activamente en los arreglos de las canciones, aporté ideas para riffs y melodías, y traté de dar forma a los temas para que tuvieran un estilo distintivo y reconocible.
Creo que ayudé a la banda a definir su sonido con mayor claridad; no se trataba solo de tocar canciones, sino de crear una identidad musical.

🎙Mariana: Pasaste siete años en la banda Subway y grabaste álbumes con ellos. ¿Qué sientes que cambió en tu carrera durante ese período?
🎤Lord F.S: Subway tuvo tres cantantes en total, y yo estuve en la banda desde 1996 hasta 2003. Grabé dos álbumes con ellos y, sinceramente, ahí fue cuando finalmente terminó la etapa de experimentación para mí. Realmente encontré mi voz como cantante y definí mi propio estilo.
Fue el período en el que aprendí a hacer propias cada canción, a poner toda mi energía en ello y a definir quién soy sobre el escenario; ahí fue cuando mi carrera realmente dio un salto.

🎙Mariana: Con Subway hiciste giras como banda soporte de grupos como Kansas, famosos por su éxito 《Dust in the Wind》, así como de reconocidas bandas como Asia y Axxis. ¿Qué significaron esas experiencias para ti?
🎤Lord F.S: Por supuesto, hacer giras con bandas tan grandes fue una experiencia increíble. Para mí, no solo era emocionante tocar en vivo, sino también ver cómo se organizan los shows profesionales, cómo las bandas se conectan con el público y cómo un músico puede desarrollar una presencia fuerte en el escenario.
Experiencias así no tienen precio; me enseñaron lo que realmente importa y me ayudaron a mejorar mis habilidades. Aprendí mucho sobre el timing, la energía, la performance en vivo y cómo manejar los nervios. Mirando atrás, esas giras marcaron mi carrera y me dieron la confianza para desenvolverme como músico de manera mucho más independiente y segura.

🎙Mariana: En 2007 fundaste Francis Soto Band, que se mantuvo activa hasta 2010 y lanzó dos álbumes. ¿Qué se siente estar completamente a cargo de un proyecto por primera vez?
🎤Lord F.S: Fundar Francis Soto Band en 2007 fue un verdadero hito para mí. Por primera vez, tenía toda la responsabilidad: desde elegir las canciones y arreglarlas hasta definir toda la dirección artística. Fue emocionante, pero también un gran desafío, porque de repente todo dependía de mí.
Al mismo tiempo, fue increíblemente liberador poder dar vida a mi visión y verla cobrar forma tanto en el escenario como en los discos. Esa experiencia me enseñó lo importante que son el liderazgo, la organización y la toma de decisiones claras para que un proyecto sea realmente exitoso.

🎙Mariana: Tu nombre artístico “Lord Francis Soto” tiene una presencia muy fuerte. ¿Cómo surgió esa identidad y qué representa en tu evolución musical?
🎤Lord F.S: La historia detrás de “Lord Francis Soto” es bastante divertida y personal. Mi esposa sabe cuánto amo Escocia y que siempre soñé con vivir allí. Hace un tiempo, me sorprendió comprando un título de lord escocés y convirtiéndome oficialmente en lord; fue un regalo, un gesto de amor y también una pequeña broma entre nosotros.
Así que sí, técnicamente el título fue comprado, pero es real en el sentido de que estoy oficialmente reconocido como lord escocés. Decidí usarlo para mi identidad musical porque es único, memorable y refleja una parte de quién soy: alguien inspirado por Escocia, orgulloso de ello y con sentido del humor.
Es más que un título: es una historia, una conexión y le da un toque especial a mi identidad musical.

🎙Mariana: ¿Qué fue lo que más te atrajo de la banda de metal progresivo Ivory Tower, de la cual eres miembro desde 2020?
🎤Lord F.S: En principio, este estilo no es nuevo para mí; aprendí mucho tocando en una banda progresiva con Sanvoisen. Ivory Tower es en parte muy progresiva, pero también tiene mucho power metal más directo.
Creo que la música no debería hacerse solo para músicos, sino principalmente para el público en general. Un proyecto puramente progresivo puede ser difícil de conectar para muchas personas. Por eso me parece tan interesante la mezcla de Ivory Tower: técnicamente desafiante, pero al mismo tiempo enérgica y accesible para el público.

Escucho los temas con atención, memorizo los detalles y puedo interpretarlos en vivo con bastante rapidez. A estas alturas, es casi algo natural para mí.

🎙Mariana: Stonemiller Inc. reúne músicos de distintos países y trayectorias. ¿Cómo surgió la idea de formar este proyecto internacional y qué significa para ti mantener vivo el estilo del hard rock melódico de los años 80?
🎤Lord F.S: Surgió de manera bastante natural. El guitarrista Oli Fuhlhage (ex Mob Rules) tuvo la idea de darle un aire internacional a la banda, lo cual trae ventajas y desafíos. La distancia, en particular, hace difícil reunir a todos para tocar en vivo.
Y sí, los años 80 siguen vivos, no solo con Stonemiller. Muchas bandas hoy en día se inspiran en ese sonido, lo cual es genial, porque los 80 realmente fueron la cima del hard rock melódico. Para mí, se trata de mantener ese espíritu vivo y llevar la energía y el estilo de esa época hacia adelante.

🎙Mariana: Battle Royale, tu nuevo álbum disponible desde el 20 de marzo de 2026, será lanzado bajo tu identidad artística personal. ¿Qué visión o mensaje quisiste expresar con este disco que lo diferencia de tu trabajo con bandas?
🎤Lord F.S: Simplemente llegué a un punto en mi vida en el que puedo plasmar mi propia historia en la música. Sería terrible no tener nada que decir; ¡yo sí tengo algo que decir! 😄
Lo bueno es que, con suerte, muchas personas se van a identificar, diciendo “yo también siento esto”.
Quise crear canciones honestas, pero también divertidas, a veces reflexivas, a veces un poco atrevidas, como la vida misma. Un álbum solista me da la libertad de poner todo sin compromisos. Para mí, este es el momento perfecto para hacerlo. Solo espero que la gente sienta que hay verdadera pasión en la música, sin perder el sentido del humor.
Por cierto, “Battle Royale” se lanzará físicamente el 10 de abril de 2026, pero la versión MP3 ya está disponible.

🎙Mariana: ¿Tienes hobbies o pasiones además de la música?
🎤Lord F.S: Sinceramente, cuando toda tu vida gira en torno a la música, no necesitas hobbies tradicionales. 😄 Para mí, la música lo es todo: escribir, tocar, grabar, girar, incluso pensar ideas… esa es mi vida.
Igualmente, está bueno desconectar a veces: hacer un poco de deporte, estar en la naturaleza, ver una buena película o pasar tiempo con amigos. Esos pequeños momentos te recargan para volver a la música con toda la energía.

🎙Mariana: ¿Qué consejo le darías a las nuevas generaciones de músicos para sostener una carrera durante más de tres décadas, considerando todos los cambios tecnológicos y de la industria?
🎤Lord F.S: Creo que el consejo más importante es mantenerse siempre auténtico. La música es una pasión, y quien solo sigue tendencias no dura a largo plazo. Hay que encontrar la propia voz y estilo.
También es clave ser flexible. La forma en que se produce, distribuye y consume la música ha cambiado muchísimo. Los músicos deben estar dispuestos a aprender cosas nuevas, usar nuevos canales y adaptarse sin perder su esencia.
Y por último: paciencia y perseverancia. Hay altos y bajos, pero si realmente tienes pasión y trabajas constantemente, puedes sostener una carrera durante décadas.

🎙Mariana: ¿Hay algún lugar donde aún no hayas tocado en vivo y te gustaría hacerlo?
🎤Lord F.S: Tokio es definitivamente un lugar donde me encantaría tocar en vivo. Después de haber tocado tres veces en Wacken, uno podría pensar que ya lo vi todo 😄, pero la verdad es que hay tantos festivales en el mundo que ni siquiera se pueden nombrar todos.
Para mí, siempre se trata de vivir nuevas experiencias, conocer nuevas personas y subir a nuevos escenarios.
