Creators of Alaturka Metal, now at the frontier of progressive metal

🎙Mariana: How did the idea of founding a metal band emerge in a country with such strong traditions as Turkey?

💥Angona: Hello. First of all, thank you for your appreciation of Angona and for the opportunity to do this interview. Actually, metal is a culture in itself. In other words, beyond a country’s traditions, its own culture is completely universal. So the answer lies in the power of metal, the sense of freedom it provides, and its capacity for rebellion. I could certainly extend this list further. Metal is a culture and a perspective in its own right.

🎙Mariana: The band was initially founded in 2007. What led you in 2011 to reorganize it and change its name (since it was originally Langona)?
💥Angona: The journey we began in 2007 under the name Langona was actually in the Death/Thrash metal style. Around 2010, the band experienced some problems and took a break for about a year. During that time, together with our friends, we set out to discover a style we called Symphonic Alaturka Metal. We decided to pursue this direction and wanted to change several things. In fact, Langona and Angona refer to the same animal in Turkey. It is a small change, but the meaning remains the same. That is why we felt the need to completely change our style, logo, and name.

🎙Mariana: Angona is a pioneering band in the symphonic alaturka metal genre. What challenges do you face when blending such different timbres, especially since this style incorporates instruments like the bağlama or the ney?
💥Angona: Actually, we can associate this style with folk metal and oriental metal. It comes from the same family but includes different elements, such as a metalcore structure, symphonic foundations, and the fact that Alaturka performances are not disconnected from the song. In other words, while a heavy riff is being played, an Eastern-based melody runs underneath. Synthesis is generally difficult, but the additional challenge of this style is achieving that integration. Western musical scales and Turkish musical scales are used differently. Some notes found in Turkish music do not exist in Western music, so special attention must be paid during performance. And, of course, the mixing and mastering processes can be even more exhausting than usual, because correctly blending instruments that sound completely different requires highly professional work.

🎙Mariana: What challenges do Turkish metal bands face when trying to reach an international audience?
💥Angona: The main problem is economic. When you buy an instrument or recording equipment, you pay much more for it. Recording opportunities in studios also vary depending on the city and can even be limited. In a large city, you need strong resources. Beyond that, the chances of earning money by performing metal music are very slim. There are very few bands of this kind in Turkey. Many bands spend their own money to make a name for themselves. To give Angona as an example, Angona handles its own mixing and mastering, records its own tracks, shoots its own music videos, designs its own album covers, and builds its own website. In short, everything Angona does is carried out by the band members themselves. Unfortunately, in Angona a musician cannot be only a musician; they inevitably have to take on other responsibilities as well.

🎙Mariana: Which bands or artists, both from international metal and local music, have influenced your sound the most?
💥Angona: Frankly, there are many local bands we respect, but no local band has influenced our direction. We love many local bands and try to support them within our own small circle. Of course, many internationally renowned bands have influenced our music. Since we recently began playing Progressive Groove Metal, I can mention the bands that influenced us in this phase, including Machine Head, Pantera, Parkway Drive, and Bleed From Within.

🎙Mariana: Regarding the band’s songwriting process, who participates in composing the songs? Do you usually start with the lyrics or the music, and which songs best represent you as a band?
💥Angona: I will not talk about our old style when answering this question, because when we were performing Symphonic Alaturka Metal, the composition process was more complex. Since we switched to Progressive Groove Metal, I write the compositions and lyrics. Of course, my bandmates contribute greatly during the recording process. That is why, in the end, the Angona song comes together as a collective result. It does not matter who originally composed it.

🎙Mariana: Which Angona song has the strongest impact on audiences during live performances?
💥Angona: We recently released our EP Ashborn. Including the intro, it consists of six songs, and the music video we shot for “Mold Stench” stands out the most. We believe it is a powerful song that connects us with the audience during live performances. Besides that, I would place “Echoes of Rage” in second position.
   

🎙Mariana: The title The Harmony of Differences suggests the union of opposites. What specific “differences” were you trying to reconcile musically or culturally in this EP, and what was the greatest challenge in achieving that balance?
💥Angona: The Harmony of Differences was our first project as Angona. Of course, there were challenges. It was our first time recording an album, and we lacked experience. However, I believe it was one of our most meticulous works within the Symphonic Alaturka style. All band members were focused on the album and worked on it every day. If we had been more experienced, the album could have been much more impressive. Nevertheless, the experiences we gained gave us many beautiful memories. When we look back, we are proud of what we achieved.

🎙Mariana: A.T.A. (EP 2013) marked a stage of consolidation for Angona within the underground metal scene, and its title carries a strong symbolic meaning. What specific meaning did you give it, and what does this EP represent within the band’s artistic identity?
💥Angona: Actually, this album was our first attempt to perform Symphonic Alaturka in our own language. The album includes both covers and original compositions. In that sense, it is a special album for us. We also used an instrument called the kanun on this album, which is not typically used in metal music.

🎙Mariana: The EP Tanzimat (2015) is deeply connected to history and cultural transformation. What inspired you to develop this concept, and what meaning does it hold for you today within your discography, considering it is a conceptual EP very different from your other works?

💥Angona: This album features our most-streamed cover. “Eşkiya Dünyaya Hükümdar Olmaz” received significantly more streams than our other songs at the time. It still holds a special place for us. Additionally, the Tanzimat album was the first where we clearly heard the core riffs and groove structure. While integrating Symphonic Alaturka, the music evolved and changed. We began to witness that transformation through this album.

 

🎙Mariana: Ashborn is a very intense EP, both in sound and in its titles. What central concept or idea connects the songs in this work, and what does Ashborn mean to you as a band?
💥Angona: Ashborn is a very important project for us. First of all, the lyrics tell Angona’s story from beginning to end. When you listen to them in order, you can clearly understand the journey we began as Langona in 2007 and how it developed up to 2025. For us, Ashborn means rebirth. That is why we have also renewed our style and logo, as you know. We will move forward with a stronger sound and a more intense sense of rebellion. We want to involve the audience more in this project, which is why we will also embark on an international tour for Ashborn. We may visit many places in 2026.

🎙Mariana: What message would you give to young metal musicians trying to create something original in challenging scenes?
💥Angona: If they truly know they are original and are aware of it, they should never give up. They should continue on this path, learning something from each experience and building upon it. There may be good scenes or bad scenes, good recordings or bad recordings. Believe me, they will all teach something and lead to personal fulfillment. I do not have much to say about reaching the top in a social sense, but groups without a strong foundation have no chance of reaching the top socially. That is why they must put aside their egos and focus entirely on the music and the stage.

🎙Mariana: Which live show do you feel has been the best in the band’s history?
💥Angona: There are many memorable moments. Actually, the size of the venue does not really matter. However, the 2016 Zeytinli Rock Festival is very important to us. We were very excited, and I can still feel that excitement even after ten years.

 

🎙Mariana: Where would you most like to perform live that you haven’t yet? (Country, venue, or festival)
💥Angona: If we imagine completely full stands and spectators coming specifically for Angona, then a large festival in the United States, Germany, or South America would be a dream for us. Since it is a dream, I have not set any limits. Realizing this kind of dream is something many bands aspire to. I hope all the bands we love achieve their dreams, just as we hope to achieve ours with Angona.

🎙Mariana: What can we expect from Angona in the coming months? Is there new material on the way?
💥Angona: Angona is embarking on a Balkan tour. For now, we will visit two countries: Bosnia and Herzegovina and Serbia. Upon our return, a 10-track album and new concerts will be waiting for us. Our concert schedule is not very busy at the moment due to our album plans, but we will announce everything soon. In the meantime, a Turkish song titled “Av” will be released in February.

💥Angona: Hola. Antes que nada, gracias por su apreciación hacia Angona y por la idea de realizar esta entrevista. En realidad, el metal es una cultura en sí misma. Es decir, más allá de las tradiciones dentro del país, su propia cultura es completamente universal. Así que podemos encontrar la respuesta en el poder del metal, en la sensación de libertad que brinda y en su capacidad de rebelión. Podría extender esta lista aún más. El metal es una cultura y una perspectiva en sí misma.

🎙Mariana: La banda fue fundada inicialmente en 2007. ¿Qué los llevó en 2011 a reorganizarla y cambiar su nombre (ya que originalmente era Langona)?
💥Angona: El camino que comenzamos en 2007 bajo el nombre Langona era en realidad de estilo Death/Thrash metal. Alrededor de 2010, la banda experimentó algunos problemas y se tomó un descanso de aproximadamente un año. Durante ese tiempo, nos propusimos con nuestros amigos descubrir un estilo que llamamos Symphonic Alaturka Metal. Nos decidimos por eso y quisimos cambiar algunas cosas. En realidad, Langona y Angona se refieren al mismo animal en Turquía. Es un cambio pequeño, pero el significado sigue siendo el mismo. Por eso sentimos la necesidad de cambiar completamente nuestro estilo, logo y nombre.

🎙Mariana: Angona es una banda pionera en el género symphonic alaturka metal. ¿Qué desafíos enfrentan al combinar timbres tan diferentes, especialmente al incorporar instrumentos como el bağlama o el ney?
💥Angona: En realidad, podemos asociar este estilo con el folk metal y el metal oriental. Proviene de la misma familia pero tiene partes diferentes, incluyendo una estructura metalcore, bases sinfónicas y el hecho de que las interpretaciones alaturka no están desconectadas de la canción; es decir, mientras suena un riff pesado, por debajo corre una melodía de base oriental. La síntesis suele ser difícil, pero la dificultad extra de este estilo es lograr esa integración. Las escalas musicales occidentales y turcas pueden utilizarse de manera ligeramente diferente. Algunas notas presentes en la música turca no existen en la música occidental. Por lo tanto, hay que prestar atención a esto al interpretar. Y, por supuesto, los procesos de mezcla y masterización pueden ser incluso más agotadores de lo habitual, porque mezclar correctamente instrumentos que suenan completamente diferentes requiere un trabajo totalmente profesional.

🎙Mariana: ¿Qué desafíos enfrentan las bandas de metal turcas al intentar llegar a una audiencia internacional?
💥Angona: El principal problema es económico. Cuando compras un instrumento o equipo de grabación, pagas mucho más por él. Además, las posibilidades de grabar en estudios varían según la ciudad e incluso pueden ser limitadas. En una gran ciudad necesitas buenos recursos. Más allá de eso, tus posibilidades de ganar dinero tocando metal son muy escasas. Hay muy pocas bandas de este tipo en Turquía. Muchas bandas gastan su propio dinero para hacerse un nombre. Para dar a Angona como ejemplo: Angona realiza su propia mezcla y masterización, graba sus propias pistas, filma sus propios videoclips, diseña sus propias portadas y construye su propio sitio web. En resumen, todo lo que hace Angona lo hacen sus propios miembros. Lamentablemente, en Angona un músico no puede ser solo músico; inevitablemente debe asumir otras tareas también.

🎙Mariana: ¿Qué bandas o artistas, tanto del metal internacional como de la música local, han influido más en su sonido?
💥Angona: Francamente, hay muchas bandas locales que respetamos, pero ninguna ha influido en nuestro rumbo. Amamos a muchas bandas locales e intentamos apoyarlas dentro de nuestro pequeño círculo. Por supuesto, hay muchas bandas internacionales que han influido en nuestra música, pero como recientemente comenzamos a tocar Progressive Groove Metal, puedo decir cuáles nos han influido en esta etapa: Machine Head, Pantera, Parkway Drive y Bleed From Within.

🎙Mariana: Respecto al proceso de composición, ¿quién participa en la creación de las canciones? ¿Suelen empezar por la letra o por la música? ¿Qué canciones los representan mejor como banda?
💥Angona: No hablaré de nuestro estilo anterior al responder esto, porque cuando hacíamos Symphonic Alaturka Metal el plan de composición era más complejo. Desde que cambiamos al Progressive Groove Metal, yo escribo las composiciones y las letras. Por supuesto, mis compañeros aportan mucho durante el proceso de grabación. Por eso, al final del día, la canción de Angona se construye colectivamente. No importa quién la haya compuesto.

🎙Mariana: ¿Qué canción de Angona tiene el mayor impacto en el público durante los shows en vivo?
💥Angona: Recientemente lanzamos nuestro álbum Ashborn. Junto con su intro, es un EP de seis canciones, y el videoclip indiscutido que grabamos para “Mold Stench”. Creemos que es una canción hermosa que nos conecta con el público en vivo. Además, también pondría a “Echoes of Rage” en segundo lugar.

🎙Mariana: El título The Harmony of Differences sugiere la unión de opuestos. ¿Qué “diferencias” buscaban reconciliar musical o culturalmente en ese EP, y cuál fue el mayor desafío para lograr ese equilibrio?
💥Angona: The Harmony of Differences fue nuestro primer proyecto como Angona. Por supuesto hubo desafíos. Era la primera vez que grabábamos un álbum y nos faltaba experiencia. Sin embargo, creo que fue uno de nuestros trabajos más meticulosos dentro del ámbito del Symphonic Alaturka. Todos los miembros estaban enfocados en el álbum y trabajaron en él cada día. Si hubiéramos tenido más experiencia, podría haber sido mucho más impresionante. Pero aun así, las experiencias que vivimos nos dejaron hermosos recuerdos y cuando miramos hacia atrás, estamos orgullosos de lo que hicimos.

🎙Mariana: A.T.A. (EP 2013) marcó una etapa de consolidación para Angona dentro de la escena underground del metal, y su título tiene un fuerte significado simbólico. ¿Qué significado específico le dieron y qué representa este EP dentro de la identidad artística de la banda?
💥Angona: En realidad, este álbum fue nuestro primer intento de interpretar Symphonic Alaturka en nuestro propio idioma. Incluye versiones y composiciones originales. En ese sentido es un álbum especial para nosotros. Utilizamos un instrumento llamado kanun en este álbum, que no es habitual en el metal.

Al integrar el Symphonic Alaturka, la música evolucionó y cambió. Comenzamos a presenciar esa transformación gracias a este álbum.

🎙Mariana: Ashborn es un EP muy intenso, tanto en sonido como en sus títulos. ¿Qué concepto central conecta las canciones y qué significa Ashborn para ustedes como banda?
💥Angona: Ashborn es un proyecto muy importante para nosotros. En primer lugar, las letras cuentan la historia de Angona desde el principio hasta el final. Si las escuchas en orden, puedes entender el viaje que comenzamos como Langona en 2007 hasta 2025. Ashborn significa renacimiento para nosotros, por eso también renovamos nuestro estilo y logo. Avanzaremos con un sonido más fuerte y una rebelión más intensa. Queremos involucrar más al público en este proyecto, por eso también realizaremos una gira internacional de Ashborn. Podríamos visitar muchos lugares en 2026.

🎙Mariana: ¿Qué mensaje darían a jóvenes músicos de metal que intentan crear algo original en escenas difíciles?
💥Angona: Si realmente saben que son originales y son conscientes de ello, definitivamente no deberían rendirse. Deben continuar por ese camino, aprender algo de cada trabajo y construir sobre ello. Puede haber buenas escenas o malas escenas, buenas grabaciones o malas grabaciones. Créeme, todas enseñan algo y conducen a la realización personal. No tengo mucho que decir sobre alcanzar la cima en un sentido social, pero los grupos sin base no tienen posibilidades de llegar arriba socialmente. Por eso deben dejar de lado el ego y centrarse completamente en la música y el escenario.

🎙Mariana: ¿Qué show en vivo consideran el mejor en la historia de la banda?
💥Angona: Hay muchos momentos memorables. En realidad, el tamaño del lugar no importa. Sin embargo, el Zeytinli Rock Festival 2016 es muy importante para nosotros. Estábamos muy emocionados y todavía puedo sentir esa emoción incluso después de 10 años.

🎙Mariana: ¿Dónde les gustaría tocar en vivo y aún no lo han hecho? (País, recinto o festival)
💥Angona: Si imaginamos tribunas completamente llenas y público que viene por Angona, entonces un gran festival en Estados Unidos, Alemania o Bosnia y Herzegovina o Serbia podría ser un sueño para nosotros. Como es un sueño, no he puesto límites. Realizar este tipo de sueño es el sueño de muchas bandas. Espero que todos los grupos que amamos cumplan sus sueños en Angona.

🎙Mariana: ¿Qué podemos esperar de Angona en los próximos meses? ¿Hay material nuevo en camino?
💥Angona: Angona emprenderá una gira por los Balcanes. Por ahora visitaremos dos países: Bosnia y Herzegovina y Serbia. A nuestro regreso nos esperará un álbum de 10 canciones y nuevos conciertos. Nuestro calendario de conciertos no está muy cargado debido a los planes del álbum, pero anunciaremos todo pronto. Mientras tanto, en febrero se lanzará una canción en turco titulada “Av”.
