🎙Mariana:How did your interest in music begin?
🎸Oliver: I’ve always loved listening to music. Back in the 90s, it started with whatever was on the radio – mostly charts and pop stuff (I didn’t know any better at the time!). Later, I discovered some German rock and punk bands like Die Ärzte and Die Toten Hosen.
The real turning point came when a friend introduced me to Metallica – that raw energy, loud and powerful, just blew me away. From there, I dove deeper into the world of metal. And when I first heard Iron Maiden, that was it – I was hooked for life. Since then, Heavy Metal has always been my home, though I still enjoy discovering new bands and sounds along the way.
🎙Mariana: Which bands or artists were your main inspirations?
🎸Oliver: Early on, it was clear: Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Running Wild, and Accept shaped my first songs. Later, Thrash and Power Metal bands also inspired me.
But I don’t consciously try to sound like anyone. It’s more a natural process: you hear a killer riff, learn it, it pushes your technique, and suddenly your own ideas appear. That’s how Tomb of Giants’ sound evolved – rooted in classic heavy metal, but shaped by what we discover and create together.
🎙Mariana: What was the process of founding your band like, and how did the idea to call it “Tomb of Giants” come about?
🎸Oliver: The band formed almost by accident in 2013. My brother Mirco, bassist Daniel, a friend, and I played AC/DC, Deep Purple, and Accept for a small local event, joined by Thomas “Chicken” Klaus, a local singer. It was a huge deal – my brother was 13, I was 23.
The gig was so much fun that we decided to continue with original songs. Daniel and Mirco are still in the band, Yannik joined in 2019, and Kai “Roarside” Nikolayczyk is our current vocalist – a line-up that feels solid.
The name comes from a level in Dark Souls. Most of our other ideas were taken or… questionable online. Tomb of Giants stuck immediately. It has mystique and reflects our goal: stepping into the footprints of metal’s great giants.
🎙Mariana: Who is in charge of the songwriting process in the band, or maybe is it a shared effort?
🎸Oliver: So far, I’ve mainly been responsible for the songwriting. Usually I bring riffs, melodies, or rough song ideas into the rehearsal room. From there, we work together on arranging, refining parts, and adding new ideas. Everyone contributes creatively, which makes the songs feel like a true band effort.
With Yannik joining, we gained fresh input on guitar, and on our latest EP both Mirco and Kai contributed to the lyrics of Evilnator and The Flame. That was a big step forward, showing that the creative process is becoming more collaborative. Different perspectives always bring new energy into the songs, which is important for the band’s future.
🎙Mariana: Of all your band’s songs, which are your favorites to play live?
🎸Oliver: I enjoy playing all our songs live, but "When Destiny Calls" from the older material is a staple – that driving gallop hits hard. From the new songs, definitely "The Flame", it’s a pure, traditional Heavy Metal rush and a joy to perform live.
🎙Mariana: If you had the chance with Tomb of Giants to open a concert for another band, (I think I know the answer...), but which one would you like it to be?
🎸Oliver: Iron Maiden, without a doubt. Their music has been a huge influence on me and the band. Sharing the stage with them would be a dream come true.
🎙Mariana: What changes do you feel Tomb of Giants made in its new album Holding the Flame compared to the band’s first self-titled album released in 2017?
🎸Oliver: The biggest difference is definitely experience. Back in 2017, when we released our self-titled debut, we had very little knowledge about the whole recording and production process – we even tried to mix and master ourselves. Looking back, that was brave, but maybe not the wisest choice. Since then, we’ve learned a lot. With Legacy of the Sword (2023), we worked with Jörg Uken, and for Holding the Flame, we teamed up with Andy Classen. His mix and master gave the songs a whole new level of power and clarity.
On top of that, we’ve grown as musicians. Songwriting has matured, arrangements are more refined, and every detail gets the space it deserves. And of course, the biggest change is Kai joining us as the new voice of Tomb of Giants. A singer change is always a big risk, but it turned out to be a real stroke of luck. Kai not only brought a powerful voice but also became a great friend, and together we’re excited to push the band even further.
We deliberately chose to release Holding the Flame as an EP: to introduce Kai, present new material with The Flame and Evilnator, and revisit our roots with fresh versions of Midnight Devil and When Destiny Calls. This EP marks the next step forward – and we’re already working on the next full album.
🎸Oliver: We do our videos entirely ourselves. The Flame was shot in our rehearsal room and a small bar next door. We planned each scene, then brought it to life as best we could.
The song tells a story: no matter how stressful life gets, music and friends catch you, give strength, and let you have fun. That’s the motto of Holding the Flame: keep heavy metal alive, enjoy life, and know you can get through anything.
🎸Oliver: I hope we keep growing as a band, having fun, playing great shows, and meeting amazing people. Of course, it would be amazing if more listeners discovered our music.
For the first time, we’re reaching out to labels for the next album, so let’s see what happens. But one thing’s for sure: we’re full of energy, we’re sticking with it, and it’ll never be boring with Tomb of Giants.
🎙Mariana: What is the most incredible thing that has happened to you in your career from the beginning until now?
🎸Oliver: Honestly, the most incredible thing happened in mid-2024. I really thought we’d have to take a long break until we found a new singer – it was a heavy moment. And then, by chance, Yannik got a reply to an ad, this guy shows up at rehearsal, and everything just clicked. A few weeks later, we were already recording our EP.
From there, it’s been amazing: starting the year with the Kuhzifest in East Frisia in front of 700 heavy metal maniacs, then festivals like Maiwoche in Osnabrück, the EP release with incredible feedback, Hütte Rockt, and recently Rock bei Kurt. Some of these stages almost feel like Wacken!
Honestly, 2025 has been the highlight of my career with the band, and I couldn’t be happier. I hope we can use this momentum for the new album. We’re having an incredible time making music together, and we want that to shine through. We’re keeping the flame alive!

🎙Mariana: ¿Qué bandas o artistas fueron tus principales inspiraciones?
🎸Oliver: Desde el principio estuvo claro: Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Running Wild y Accept marcaron mis primeras canciones. Más adelante, también me inspiraron bandas de Thrash y Power Metal.
Pero no intento sonar deliberadamente como nadie. Es un proceso más natural: escuchás un riff asesino, lo aprendés, te exige técnica, y de repente surgen tus propias ideas. Así evolucionó el sonido de Tomb of Giants: enraizado en el heavy metal clásico, pero moldeado por lo que descubrimos y creamos juntos.
🎙Mariana: ¿Cómo fue el proceso de fundar tu banda, y cómo surgió la idea de llamarla “Tomb of Giants”?
🎸Oliver: La banda se formó casi por accidente en 2013. Mi hermano Mirco, el bajista Daniel, un amigo y yo tocamos canciones de AC/DC, Deep Purple y Accept en un pequeño evento local, junto a Thomas “Chicken” Klaus, un cantante local. Fue un gran acontecimiento: mi hermano tenía 13 años, yo 23.
El show fue tan divertido que decidimos seguir con canciones originales. Daniel y Mirco siguen en la banda, Yannik se unió en 2019, y Kai “Roarside” Nikolayczyk es nuestro vocalista actual: una formación que se siente sólida.
El nombre viene de un nivel del videojuego Dark Souls. La mayoría de nuestras otras ideas ya estaban tomadas o eran… cuestionables online. Tomb of Giants pegó de inmediato. Tiene mística y refleja nuestro objetivo: seguir los pasos de los grandes gigantes del metal.
🎙Mariana: ¿Quién está a cargo del proceso de composición en la banda, o es más bien un esfuerzo compartido?
🎸Oliver: Hasta ahora, yo he sido principalmente responsable de la composición. Generalmente llevo riffs, melodías o ideas de canciones al ensayo. A partir de ahí, trabajamos juntos en arreglos, pulimos partes y sumamos nuevas ideas. Todos contribuyen creativamente, lo que hace que las canciones se sientan como un verdadero esfuerzo de banda.

🎙Mariana: Si tuvieras la oportunidad con Tomb of Giants de abrir un concierto para otra banda, creo saber la respuesta... pero ¿cuál te gustaría que fuera?
🎸Oliver: Iron Maiden, sin ninguna duda. Su música ha sido una gran influencia para mí y para la banda. Compartir escenario con ellos sería un sueño hecho realidad.
🎙Mariana: ¿Qué cambios sentís que hizo Tomb of Giants en su nuevo álbum Holding the Flame en comparación con el primer álbum homónimo de 2017?
🎸Oliver: La mayor diferencia es, sin dudas, la experiencia. En 2017, cuando lanzamos nuestro debut homónimo, teníamos muy poco conocimiento sobre el proceso de grabación y producción – incluso intentamos mezclar y masterizar nosotros mismos. Mirando atrás, fue valiente, pero quizá no la mejor decisión. Desde entonces hemos aprendido mucho. Además de eso, hemos crecido como músicos. La composición maduró, los arreglos son más refinados, y cada detalle recibe el espacio que merece. Y, por supuesto, el cambio más grande fue la incorporación de Kai como la nueva voz de Tomb of Giants. Cambiar de cantante siempre es un gran riesgo, pero resultó ser un verdadero golpe de suerte. Kai no solo trajo una voz poderosa, sino que también se convirtió en un gran amigo, y juntos estamos emocionados por llevar a la banda aún más lejos.
Decidimos lanzar Holding the Flame como un EP deliberadamente: para presentar a Kai, mostrar nuevo material con The Flame y Evilnator, y revisitar nuestras raíces con nuevas versiones de "Midnight Devil" y "When Destiny Calls", Este EP marca el próximo paso hacia adelante – y ya estamos trabajando en el próximo álbum completo.

Por primera vez, estamos contactando a sellos para el próximo álbum, así que veremos qué pasa. Pero de algo estoy seguro: estamos llenos de energía, seguimos adelante, y con Tomb of Giants nunca habrá aburrimiento.
