🎙Mariana:

Mike, welcome to the interview. It's great to have the opportunity to learn more about your career, my first question is: How did you get started with music?

🎸Mike: My passion for music came in the mid-seventies  when I was introduced to the music of the band "KISS". The passion was instant & fierce after hearing their music.

🎙Mariana: What was your first musical instrument?
🎸Mike: Although my passion truly began when I picked up the guitar; my first instrument was the accordian. I went and studied at the "Royal Conservatory of Music" for 3 years. It wasn't much fun for me actually, as I never felt comfortable with the instrument, however it really gave me the opportunity to learn the theory of music.

🎙Mariana:  Besides Kiss, What other artists and bands were your influences?
🎸Mike: What got it all started for me was "KISS" no doubt! Seeing and hearing Ace Frehley play is what made me pick up the guitar in the first place!  It was Eddie Van Halen though that really centred my interests to play lead guitar. I saw him  with front row centre seats in '81 and that show left me wanting to start my journey to shred on guitar. After that, I started listening to many progressive guitar players like Malmsteen; Uli Jon Roth; Rhodes; Blackmoore & many others. It's really a culmination of many influences that paved my path to the sound I have today.

🎙Mariana: Who composes the music you play?
 🎸Mike: Almost all of my releases are written by me. I've only publically released one cover song and even that track was an adaptation of the original version. The song was "Hungarian Dance No. 5" I put my own stamp on that one!

🎙Mariana:  Which of the songs you play is your favorite?
🎸MikeI would definitely say that would be "Over The Top". I really enjoyed the back half of the song as it is a minute and a half solo!
I've recorded that track a few times and it always had a diiferent solo in it. Although the structure was similar, the solos never were as I enjoyed just the spontaneity of the moment to solo!
 
🎙Mariana: Let's say you could choose an artist to share the stage with. I think I have an idea of what you'd answer, but I'll ask it anyway. Who would you choose?
🎸Mike: That would be easy to answer....Ace Frehley! This is the reason I even picked
up the guitar with such eager interest in the first place!
I can even tell the songs that I would love to jam with him on: "Speedin' Back to My Baby" & "Shock Me"! Ya!!!!!!!
 

🎙Mariana: Is there any moments early on for you that stand out for being memorable or spontaneous playing in Toronto back in the day?

🎸Mike: Yes, of course!, It was probably the early nineties & back then I used to periodically show up at popular jam night bars in Toronto. I remember one jam night showing up at the "El Mocambo" and there was a great group of prog musicians there. I briefly chatted with a few of them & we got up on      stage & did an improve rendition of Yngwie J Malmsteen's "Far Beyond The Sun"! I must say, considering I've never met these guys before, we did a seriously good performance! I noticed a few jaws dropping in the audience too, so I guess they approved as well! LOL! Toronto really had a lot of talented musicians back then & I am lucky to have met quite a few of them over the years!
There was no social media and internet back then! LOL!!!!)
Even though without all the modern tech these days, we still figured out a way to ROCK!

🎙Mariana: Mike bienvenido a la entrevista, es genial tener la oportunidad de conocer más sobre tu carrera. Mi primera pregunta es: ¿Cómo fueron tus comienzos en la música?
🎸Mike: Mi pasión por la música surgió a mediados de los setenta, cuando conocí la música de la banda "KISS". La pasión fue instantánea y feroz después de escuchar su música.

🎙Mariana: ¿Cuál fue tu primer instrumento musical?
🎸Mike: Aunque mi verdadera pasión comenzó cuando empecé a tocar la guitarra, mi primer instrumento fue el acordeón. Estudié en el Real Conservatorio de Música durante tres años. La verdad es que no fue muy divertido, ya que nunca me sentí cómodo con el instrumento; sin embargo, me dio la oportunidad de aprender la teoría musical.

🎙Mariana: Además de Kiss, que otros artistas o bandas fueron tus influencias en la música?
🎸Mike: Sin duda, lo que me impulsó a empezar fue "KISS". Ver y escuchar tocar a Ace Frehley fue lo que me impulsó a tocar la guitarra, Sin embargo, fue Eddie Van Halen quien realmente despertó mi interés por tocar la guitarra principal. Lo vi en primera fila en el '81 y ese concierto me dejó con ganas de empezar mi aventura con la guitarra. Después, empecé a escuchar a muchos guitarristas progresivos como Malmsteen, Uli Jon Roth, Rhodes, Blackmoore y muchos otros. Es realmente la suma de muchas influencias lo que allanó el camino hacia el sonido que tengo hoy.

🎙Mariana: ¿Quien o quienes componen tus temas?
🎸Mike: Casi todos mis lanzamientos son de mi autoría. Solo he publicado un cover, e incluso esa canción fue una adaptación de la versión original. La canción era "Danza Húngara n.º 5". ¡Le puse mi sello personal!

🎙Mariana: ¿Cuál de todos los temas que tocas es tu favorito?
🎸Mike: Definitivamente diría que es "Over The Top". Disfruto mucho en la segunda mitad de la canción, ya que es un solo de un minuto y medio. He grabado esa canción varias veces y siempre tenía un solo diferente. Aunque la estructura era similar, los solos nunca lo fueron, yo  disfruté simplemente de la espontaneidad del momento para hacer el solo.

🎙Mariana: Supongamos que pudieras elegir un artista con quien compartir el escenario, creo tener una idea de lo que responderás, pero lo preguntaré de cualquier modo. ¿A quien elegirías?
🎸Mike: Sería fácil responder... ¡Ace Frehley! ¡Por eso mismo empecé a tocar la guitarra con tanto entusiasmo! ¡Incluso puedo decirte las canciones en las que me encantaría improvisar con él: "Speedin' Back to My Baby" y "Shock Me"! ¡Sí!

🎙Mariana: ¿Hubo algún momento de tu juventud en la época en la que tocabas en Toronto que te resulte inolvidable por ser inesperado?

🎸Mike: Si, por supuesto!: Probablemente fue a principios de los noventa, por aquel entonces solía ir periódicamente a bares populares de Toronto. Recuerdo una noche de improvisación en "El Mocambo", había un grupo genial de músicos progresivos. Charlé brevemente con algunos de ellos, subimos al escenario e hicimos una versión mejorada de "Far Beyond The Sun" de Yngwie J. Malmsteen. Debo decir que, considerando que nunca los había visto antes, ¡hicimos una actuación realmente buena!, Noté que algunos del público también se quedaron boquiabiertos, así que supongo que también lo aprobaron, [Risas]. Toronto tenía muchísimos músicos talentosos en aquel entonces, ¡y tengo la suerte de haber conocido a muchos de ellos a lo largo de los años! ¡No había redes sociales ni internet en aquel entonces!, [Risas], y Aunque hoy en día tenemos tanta tecnología moderna, ¡seguimos encontrando la manera de rockear!
