 🎙How did you get started in music?
 🥁PONTUS: I knew what I wanted to do at the age of ten. I played in bands as a teenager but my career started in Los Angeles California when I was 20 years old. I lived and worked there for years and I still see CA as my second home even though I haven’t lived there for many years.

🎙Mariana: What was your first musical instrument?
🥁PONTUS: It was always drums, tried different instruments but my only interest was drums, from the age of seven.

🎙Mariana: What artists or bands were your main influences?
🥁PONTUS: When I was around 11 years old AC/DC, Iron Maiden, Guns N’ Roses came in to my life. My first song I learned and played along to was "Thunder Struck" by AC/DC. The second song I learned was "Something Happened On The Way To Heaven" by Phil Collins. At the age of 13 my music teacher played me a bunch of Toto songs and I’ve been a hardcore fan of Toto ever since. Then other bands followed like Journey and Chicago for example. When I moved to the United States I got really into Funk, Soul, RnB, Country Pop/Rock and tons of fusion music. I used to see myself as a rock drummer who loves to play Funk and Soul. Nowadays a great song is a great song and I don’t think in terms of music genres. I just try to serve the song as best as I can.

             

🎙Mariana:What challenge does a musician face when choosing the drums as an instrument? (Since they require a lot of physical movement)

🥁PONTUS: I only can say: Come prepared, be on time, practice, warm up before the gig, stretch, stay relaxed and don’t think. Like one of my all time favorite drummers Vinnie Colaiuta says: "Thought is the enemy of flow"

🎙Mariana: Besides music, do you have any other activities? 
🥁PONTUS: When I'm not touring or recording, I enjoy giving talks and workshops on motivation and self-improvement throughout Scandinavia. I do lectures as often as I can, in those lectures I play a few songs. My lecture is called "Dare To Dream". It’s about having a dream and what you can do to make that dream a goal. I love to inspire others and of course to be inspired. You don’t have to be a drummer, you don’t have to be a musician to attend and to hopefully be inspired. Besides the "Dare To Dream" lecture I do a few drum clinics and Master classes when ever I can. I do a few lessons from my little studio in my house. I would love to do a little more teaching, I’ve done a few lessons online but a very few. Love it though.

I love to scuba dive but that was a long time ago. Can’t find the time at the moment. Hopefully I will find time in the future. Friends is really important to me and I’m lucky to have amazing friends.

🎙Mariana: What is it like for you to be a husband, father, and friend while also being an artist?
🥁Pontus: My kids and wife comes first and I’m extremely blessed. Friends is really important to me and I’m lucky to have amazing friends. 

     

🎙Mariana: You founded the band "Confusion" with your friend Dan Lindén in 2007,  Are there any plans to do New shows with that band?

🥁Pontus: Confusion is a fusion band. We play instrumental music. We haven’t played for years as we are so busy playing with different artists. However we have a record that we haven’t released yet. Don’t know when but I’m sure we will do a few shows later in the future.

  🎙Mariana: You are a remarkable drummer who, in addition to playing for a music legend like Joe Lynn Turner, and having worked with Glenn Hughes for 8 years, has also played for other famous artists such as Steve Augeri (Journey), Graham Bonnet (Rainbow), Jimi Jamison (Survivor) and others, How have those experiences been for you?

🥁PONTUS: First of all, I am very grateful. Being able to perform with such amazing people is always a blast and so inspiring. Glenn Hughes - the best singer on the planet took me under his wings and showed me the world. I’m so proud and happy for those 8 wonderful years. That he wanted me to record his album Resonate and that he really loved what I did, trusted my musicality, that he said that I wasn’t just a great live drummer but also a great studio drummer, meant so much to me. That he after that session introduced me as one of the best drummers in the world, is just mind boggling to me. I will forever cherish those years and I love him to pieces. Who knows what the future holds. Maybe we’ll team up again when the time is right. We’re still in touch with each other and the love we have for each other is still very strong.

Yes touring the world with Steve Augeri, Graham Bonnet, Robin Beck, Bill Champlin (Chicago), Bobby Kimball ( Toto ) Eric Martin (Mr Big) and the late Fergie Fredriksen ( Toto ) was a blast. Another dream come true. I only played one show with the late Jimmy Jamison and I was booked to do his tour when he suddenly passed away. Super sad, I miss Fergie every day. The fact that Bobby is suffering from Alzheimer’s disease is horrible. We played so many shows together around the world. It was also really cool to be asked by Steve Augeri to record two singles. Those were fun sessions. Love Steve. The fact that I’m still Joe Lynn Turners drummer (Rainbow/Deep Purple) is amazing. We recently did 2 short tours together and it was awesome. More tours with JLT are coming next year for me. . He’s just awesome both on and off the stage. A wonderful person and friend.

I’m sure I will tour again with some of the names I mentioned in a near future. At least we are talking about it. I love to play different music with amazing people. Artists and musicians who is not only colleagues, they are my friends.

🎙Mariana: ¿Cómo empezaste en la música?
🥁PONTUS: Supe lo que quería hacer a los diez años. Toqué en bandas en mi adolescencia, pero mi carrera comenzó en Los Ángeles, California, a los 20. Viví y trabajé allí durante años y todavía considero California mi segundo hogar, aunque ya no vivo allí desde hace muchos años.

🎙Mariana: ¿Cuál fue tu primer instrumento musical?
🥁PONTUS: Siempre fue la batería. Probé diferentes instrumentos, pero mi único interés fue la batería, desde los siete años.

🎙Mariana: ¿Qué artistas o bandas fueron tus principales influencias?
🥁PONTUS: Cuando tenía unos 11 años de edad, AC/DC, Iron Maiden y Guns N’ Roses entraron en mi vida. La primera canción que aprendí y toqué fue "Thunder Struck" de AC/DC. La segunda fue "Something Happened On The Way To Heaven" de Phil Collins. A los 13 años, mi profesor de música me puso un montón de canciones de Toto y desde entonces soy un fan incondicional de Toto. Después siguieron otras bandas, como Journey y Chicago, por ejemplo. Cuando me mudé a Estados Unidos, me metí de lleno en el funk, el soul, el R&B, el country pop/rock y mucha música fusión. Solía considerarme un baterista de rock al que le encantaba tocar funk y soul. Hoy en día, una gran canción es una gran canción, y no pienso en términos de géneros musicales. Simplemente intento que la canción sea lo mejor posible.

🎙Mariana: ¿Qué reto enfrenta un músico que elige la batería como instrumento? (Por el esfuerzo físico que requiere)
🥁PONTUS: Solo puedo decir algo: Ven preparado, llega puntual, practica, calienta antes del concierto, estira, relájate y no pienses. Como dice uno de mis bateristas favoritos de todos los tiempos, Vinnie Colaiuta: "El pensamiento es el enemigo del flow".


🎙Mariana: Además de la música, ¿Qué otras actividades tienes?
🥁PONTUS: Doy clases siempre que puedo, son clases de motivación y en ellas también toco algunas canciones. Mi clase se llama "Atrévete a Soñar". Trata sobre tener un sueño y qué puedes hacer para convertirlo en una meta. Me encanta inspirar a otros y, por supuesto, inspirarme. No hace falta ser baterista ni músico para asistir e inspirarse. Además de la clase "Atrévete a Soñar", doy algunas clínics de batería y clases magistrales siempre que puedo. Doy algunas clases en mi pequeño estudio en casa. Me encantaría dar más clases; he dado algunas clases online, pero muy pocas. Aunque me encanta. Me encanta bucear, pero eso fue hace mucho tiempo. Ahora mismo no encuentro tiempo. Espero encontrarlo en el futuro. Los amigos son muy importantes para mí y tengo la suerte de tener amigos increíbles.

🎙Mariana: ¿Cómo es para ti ser esposo, padre y amigo, y a la vez artista? 

🥁Pontus: Mis hijos y mi esposa son lo primero, y soy muy afortunado. Mis amigos son muy importantes para mí y tengo la suerte de tener amigos increíbles. Mis hijos y mi esposa son lo primero. Soy muy afortunado.

🎙Mariana:Fundaste la banda "Confusion" junto a tu amigo Dan Lindén en 2007, hay planes de realizar nuevos shows con esa banda?
🥁Pontus: Confusión es una banda de fusion. Tocamos música instrumental. No hemos tocado por años porque cada uno está ocupado tocando con diferentes artistas, sin embargo hemos grabado un disco que aún no hemos lanzado. No se cuando pero estoy seguro de que haremos shows luego, en un futuro. Fundé la banda junto a Dan Lindén- Teclados. En el primer álbum teníamos a Hans Johansson en guitarra,
Martin Olsson - bajo y yo en bateria.
En el album Radioactive: Dan Lindèn, Richard Hauer - guitar, Martin Olsson - bajo y yo en batería. 


🎙Mariana: Considerando que eres un baterista extraordinario que, además de estar tocando con una leyenda de la música como lo es Joe Lynn Turner y haber trabajado con Glenn Hughes durante 8 años, también has tocado para otros artistas famosos como Steve Augeri (Journey), Graham Bonnet (Rainbow) y Jimi Jamison (Survivor), entre otros, ¿cómo lo experimentaste? 

🥁PONTUS: Antes que nada estoy muy agradecido. Poder tocar con gente tan increíble,  siempre es una maravilla y muy inspirador. Glenn Hughes, el mejor cantante del planeta, me acogió y me mostró el mundo. Estoy muy orgulloso y feliz por esos 8 maravillosos años. Que quisiera que grabara su álbum Resonate, que le encantara lo que hacía, que confiara en mi musicalidad, que dijera que no solo era un gran baterista en vivo, sino también en estudio, significó muchísimo para mí. Que después de esa sesión me presentara como uno de los mejores bateristas del mundo me abruma. Siempre recordaré esos años y lo adoro profundamente. Quién sabe qué nos depara el futuro. Quizás volvamos a unirnos cuando llegue el momento. Seguimos en contacto y el amor que nos tenemos sigue siendo muy fuerte.

Sí, ir de gira por el mundo con Steve Augeri, Graham Bonnet, Robin Beck, Bill Champlin (Chicago), Bobby Kimball (Toto), Eric Martin (Mr. Big) y el fallecido Fergie Fredriksen (Toto) fue una pasada. Otro sueño hecho realidad. Solo toqué un concierto con el fallecido Jimmy Jamison y me habían contratado para su gira cuando falleció repentinamente. Es una pena, echo de menos a Fergie todos los días. Que Bobby sufra de Alzheimer es horrible. Dimos muchísimos conciertos juntos por todo el mundo. También fue genial que Steve Augeri nos pidiera grabar dos sencillos. Fueron sesiones muy divertidas. Con cariño, Steve. El hecho de que siga siendo el baterista de Joe Lynn Turner (Rainbow/Deep Purple) es increíble. Hace poco hicimos dos giras cortas juntos y fue genial. El año que viene haré más giras con JLT. Es increíble tanto dentro como fuera del escenario. Una persona maravillosa y un amigo maravilloso.
Seguro que volveré a hacer una gira con algunos de los nombres que mencioné próximamente. Al menos estamos hablando de ello.
