INTERVIEW WITH PER LÜMBERSSON (GUITARIST FOR AEON OF AWARENESS)

🎙Mariana: How did your interest in music begin?

🎸Per: My serious interest in music started when I was a teenager, around 13, after a sports injury forced me to take a long break. During that time, a friend of mine came up with the idea of starting a band and asked me to join. To be honest, I couldn't play any instruments and had absolutely no clue about music. But we got along well, so I said yes, and he tried (and failed miserably) to teach me various instruments. What really fascinated me was the range of sounds you could create with a guitar. That’s what fueled my interest in expressing my own creativity and writing songs. Additionally, entry-level guitars were pretty cheap back then, so I decided to dedicate more time to the instrument. Over the next few months, this grew into a true fascination with the guitar, a passion that has stuck with me ever since.

🎙Mariana: Besides the guitar, do you play any other musical instruments?

🎸Per: I played the cello for about two years. Besides that, about a year and a half ago, I decided to dive more deeply into the topic of harsh vocals and took lessons for over a year to learn the proper techniques. 

🎙Mariana: How are you doing with the vocal technique process?
🎸Per: I currently sing almost all of the songs live, except for "Perspective" which our session guitarist sings. I'll take over all the songs as soon as I have the energy for them, but you can hear me on the backing tracks on the new album. For future projects or songs we record in the studio, our singer and I will continue working together.

 

🎙Mariana: What bands were your biggest influences?

🎸Per: I draw my inspiration from many different bands across the rock and metal scene. There are certain songs that have stayed with me for a long time, such as "The Hunt" by Wolfheart, "The Smoke of Many Fires" by Be'lakor, and of course some classics by At The Gates. At the same time, I'm always exploring and discovering new bands. A few months ago, I came across Orbit Culture, and I really appreciate their combination of melodic death and groove metal. I find their sound refreshing and powerful, and I'm sure it will influence my future songwriting.

🎙Mariana: At what point did you start directing your musical style towards death metal?

🎸Per: This happened pretty early on, as bands like In Flames, Dark Tranquillity, and At The Gates were part of my "musical upbringing." When I was around 19, I joined my first Old School Death Metal band. That time really shaped my sense of sound and my style as a guitarist. Looking back, I'm grateful for those years, because I wasn't familiar with the American school of Old School Death Metal at the time, and I had to work hard to master the style to be able to hold my own in the band. 

🎙Mariana: Why do you think this subgenre of heavy metal is gaining more and more ground in the music industry?

🎸Per: I'm not sure if that's the case, and I can't really say if death metal is gaining more ground in the music industry. To be honest, that has never been a big factor for me. I make music for idealistic reasons, and my financial situation doesn't depend on whether our music achieves commercial success or not. 

🎙Mariana: How did the idea of naming your band "Aeon Of Awareness" come about?

🎸Per: The name Aeon of Awareness came about during a time when we were looking for a new beginning. We had played in different bands before, but wanted to explore new musical ground while also reconnecting with our roots, especially with the things that had a big influence on us in our youth. For us, this marked the beginning of a new chapter that we wanted to fill with our music. Since many of our songs deal with a mindful approach to emotions and nature, "AWARENESS" felt like the word that captured it best. 

🎙Mariana: What guitar techniques do you use to achieve the characteristic death metal sound?

🎸Per: Our characteristic AoA sound is built on some key death metal elements. We often use lower tunings and a lot of powerful, driving triplet rhythms. Tremolo picking and triplet alternate picking are essential to our sound as well. We use them to create a powerful atmosphere and a driving groove that sounds like a tank plowing through any obstacle in its path. We also use two-part harmonized lead guitars. While one guitar plays the main melody, the second one plays a harmony part, often in thirds or fifths, to create a more epic and textured sound. Ultimately, our goal is to combine powerful guitar riffs that get the crowd energized with melancholic melodies that have a certain depth and make you think.

 🎙Mariana: Which of your band's songs are your favourites to play live?

🎸Per: Right now, my favorite song to play live is a brand new one called “Amor Fati.” It hasn't been officially released yet, and we've only played it a few times live. Stylistically, it's very much in the vein of earlier At The Gates songs, so it feels energetic and intense. I feel like I can really channel a lot of energy into the audience with this song, and it creates a kind of symbiosis between us. 

🎙Mariana: What is the biggest or best thing that happened to you during your career?

🎸Per: Looking back, there are many moments in my career as a musician that I'll always be grateful for and proud of. A few stand out: First, deciding to start over a few years ago and create Aeon of Awareness, and then bringing that vision to life. I’m also incredibly grateful to have worked with so many talented musicians on this journey, many of whom have become close friends and confidants over the years. I especially want to thank Erik, Meta, Stefan, and Theo. Second, last year, I had the chance to step in as a session guitarist for the German melodic death metal band for a few shows on the "Endtime Signals" tour with Dark Tranquillity, Moonspell, and Wolfheart. Meeting Tuomas Saukkonen from Wolfheart was a personal highlight. He's one of my biggest musical influences, and without his inspiration, Aeon of Awareness wouldn’t exist as it does today.

🎙Mariana: ¿Cómo empezó tu interés por la música?
🎸Per: Mi interés por la música surgió en la adolescencia, alrededor de los 13 años, después de que una lesión deportiva me obligara a tomarme un largo descanso. Por aquel entonces, un amigo tuvo la idea de formar una banda y me invitó a unirme. Siendo sincero, no sabía tocar ningún instrumento y no tenía ni idea de música, pero nos llevabamos bien, así que acepté y él intentó (y fracasó estrepitosamente) enseñarme a tocar varios instrumentos!!. Lo que realmente me fascinaba era la variedad de sonidos que se podían crear con una guitarra. Eso fue lo que impulsó mi interés por expresar mi propia creatividad y componer canciones. Además, las guitarras de nivel básico eran bastante baratas por aquel entonces, así que decidí dedicarle más tiempo. Con el paso de los meses, esto se convirtió en una verdadera fascinación por la guitarra, una pasión que me ha acompañado desde entonces.


🎙Mariana: Además de la guitarra, ¿tocas algún otro instrumento musical?
🎸Per: Toqué el violonchelo durante unos dos años. Además, hace aproximadamente un año y medio, decidí profundizar en el tema de las voces ásperas y tomé clases durante más de un año para aprender las técnicas adecuadas.

🎙¿Cómo vas con el proceso de las técnicas de vocalizacion?
🎸Per: Ahora canto casi todas las canciones en vivo, excepto "Perspective" a esa canción la canta nuestro guitarrista de sesión. Me haré cargo de todas las canciones en cuanto tenga la energía que requieren, pero igual ya se me puede escuchar en el nuevo álbum, solo para las pistas de acompañamiento. Para los próximos proyectos o canciones que grabemos en el estudio, seguiremos trabajando juntos, nuestro cantante y yo. 


🎙Mariana: ¿Qué bandas fueron tus mayores influencias?
🎸Per: Me inspiro en muchas bandas diferentes de la escena del rock y el metal. Hay ciertas canciones que me han acompañado durante mucho tiempo, como "The Hunt" de Wolfheart, "The Smoke of Many Fires" de Be'lakor y por supuesto algunos clásicos de At The Gates. Al mismo tiempo, siempre estoy explorando y descubriendo nuevas bandas. Hace unos meses, descubrí Orbit Culture y me encanta su combinación de death melódico y groove metal. Su sonido me parece refrescante y potente, y estoy seguro de que influirá en mi composición en el futuro.


🎙Mariana: ¿En qué momento empezaste a orientar tu estilo musical hacia el death metal?
🎸Per: Esto ocurrió bastante pronto, ya que bandas como In Flames, Dark Tranquillity y At The Gates formaron parte de mi formación musical. Cuando tenía unos 19 años, me uní a mi primera banda de Old School Death Metal. Esa época realmente moldeó mi sentido del sonido y mi estilo como guitarrista. Mirando hacia atrás, estoy agradecido por esos años, porque no estaba familiarizado con la escuela estadounidense de Old School Death Metal en ese momento, y tuve que trabajar duro para dominar el estilo y poder mantenerme firme en la banda.


🎙Mariana: ¿Por qué crees que este subgénero del heavy metal está ganando cada vez más terreno en la industria musical?
🎸Per: No estoy seguro de si es así, y no puedo afirmar con certeza si el death metal está ganando terreno en la industria musical. Siendo sincero, eso nunca ha sido un factor importante para mí. Hago música por razones idealistas, y mi situación económica no depende de si nuestra música tiene éxito comercial o no. 


🎙Mariana: ¿Cómo surgió la idea de nombrar a tu banda "Aeon Of Awareness"? (Eon de conciencia)
🎸Per: El nombre Aeon of Awareness surgió en un momento en el que buscábamos un nuevo comienzo. Habíamos tocado en diferentes bandas, pero queríamos explorar nuevos horizontes musicales y, al mismo tiempo, reconectar con nuestras raíces, especialmente con aquello que nos influyó mucho en nuestra juventud. Para nosotros, esto marcó el comienzo de un nuevo capítulo que queríamos llenar con nuestra música. Dado que muchas de nuestras canciones abordan un enfoque consciente de las emociones y la naturaleza, "AWARENESS" nos pareció la palabra que mejor lo definía.


🎙Mariana: ¿Qué técnicas de guitarra utilizas para lograr el característico sonido death metal?
🎸Per: Nuestro característico sonido AoA se basa en algunos elementos clave del death metal. Solemos usar afinaciones más graves y muchos ritmos de tresillos potentes y contundentes. El punteo de trémolo y el punteo alternado de tresillos también son esenciales para nuestro sonido. Los usamos para crear una atmósfera potente y un ritmo contundente que suena como un tanque arrollando cualquier obstáculo en su camino. También utilizamos guitarras principales armonizadas a dos voces. Mientras una guitarra toca la melodía principal, la segunda interpreta una parte armónica, a menudo en terceras o quintas, para crear un sonido más épico y texturizado. En definitiva, nuestro objetivo es combinar riffs de guitarra potentes que energicen al público con melodías melancólicas con cierta profundidad que te hagan reflexionar.


🎙Mariana: ¿Cuál de las canciones de tu banda es tu favorita para tocar en vivo?
🎸Per: Ahora mismo, mi canción favorita para tocar en vivo es una nueva llamada "Amor Fati". Aún no se ha lanzado oficialmente y solo la hemos tocado un par de veces. Estilísticamente, sigue la línea de las canciones anteriores de At The Gates, así que se siente enérgica e intensa. Siento que puedo canalizar mucha energía hacia el público con esta canción y crea una especie de simbiosis entre nosotros.


🎙Mariana: ¿Qué es lo más importante que te ha sucedido en tu carrera?
🎸Per: Mirando hacia atrás, hay muchos momentos en mi carrera como músico por los que siempre estaré agradecido y orgulloso. Algunos destacan: Primero, decidir empezar de cero hace unos años y crear Aeon of Awareness, y luego hacer realidad esa visión. También estoy increíblemente agradecido de haber trabajado con tantos músicos talentosos en este viaje, muchos de los cuales se han convertido en amigos cercanos y confidentes con los años. Quiero agradecer especialmente a Erik, Meta, Stefan y Theo. Segundo: el año pasado, tuve la oportunidad de ser guitarrista de sesión para la banda alemana de death metal melódico en algunos conciertos de la gira "Endtime Signals" junto a Dark Tranquillity, Moonspell y Wolfheart. Conocer a Tuomas Saukkonen de Wolfheart fue un momento clave. Es una de mis mayores influencias musicales, y sin su inspiración, Aeon of Awareness no existiría tal como es hoy.
